Situated on the Moray Firth approximately
60 miles from Aberdeen and a similar distance from Inverness. BUCKIE developed in the 19th Century from the settlement of Buckpool, Eastern
Buckie, Yardie, Ianstown, Gordonsburgh and Portessie. Buckie has
a busy harbour with a fishing fleet, fish market and boat building
yards. Buckie also offers numerous facilities including a recently
upgraded leisure centre, two golf courses, tennis, bowling, parks,
swimming pool, caravan and camping site. The Buckie area boasts stunning
sandy beaches and an abundance of wildlife. The area also offers
a variety of scenic walks, cycling and water sports. Buckie has a
wide range of shops, restaurants, hotels and business facilities.
THE
BUCKIE DRIFTER A maritime heritage centre telling the story of the
herring fishing industry, with the opportunity to explore a real
RNLI lifeboat. St Peter's Roman Catholic Church, an architecturally
stunning twin spired church opened in 1857. The Buckie District
Fishing Heritage Museum features information on the local history
of fishing, boat building and maritime industries as well as other
items of local interest.
ANSON GALLERY features works by the famous
marine artist Peter Anson. Dolphin Watching Trips - the Moray Firth
is home to one of the only two resident populations of bottle-nosed
dolphins in Britain, trips out into the bay are available. THE
ICE CREAM CABIN a local shop featuring a wide variety of nationally
renowned gold prize winning ice creams, sorbets and frozen yoghurts.
Buckie is surrounded
by and serves a number of smaller villages in the area including:
CULLEN Approximately 6 miles from Buckie. Cullen
is an attractive small coastal town, home of "Cullen Skink" and
featuring picturesque viaducts dating from around 1886 and "The
Three Kings" rock strata. Cullen also has a golf course which
runs alongside the sandy beach.
FINDOCHTY Approximately 2 miles from
Buckie. Findochty is another fishing village dating back to the
15th Century, once a smugglers paradise and now featuring an attractive
marina with water sports club. Close by is Strathlene Golf Club
with a purpose built floodlit driving range.
PORTKNOCKIE Approximately 4 miles from Buckie. Portknockie
is a cliff top village established in the 17th Century overlooking
a natural harbour. The remains of an iron age fort have been discovered
close to the harbour. The Bow Fiddle rock just off the headland
is a popular tourist attraction.
