Rothes is situated on the River Spey between Ben Aigen and Conerock Hill. The town was founded in 1766 and in the mid nineteenth century came the building of Glen Grant Distillery. At the south end of the village lies the remains of Rothes Castle, built on a hill by Peter de Pollok about 1200 to command traffic up and down this stretch of Strathspey. The castle’s remains consist of a fragment of the massive outer wall overlooking the High Street of Rothes. The town developed into a major centre of whisky production, eventually having five distilleries. The north end of the town today has a factory which produces animal feed from the distilleries’ by-products. The local amenities include primary school, community centre, bowling, tennis, golf and football.
